March 2010

It's hard to believe it's March already, but here we are- March 2010. The (tons and tons of) snow has finally melted and today it feels like Spring. In spite of all the snow-day craziness things at LOGAN Hope are going very well. Our 54 students are learning and growing and we're all getting ready for this new season to really begin. In this newsletter I'll give you a peek into the Jr High classroom, tell you all about some current projects going on here, fill you in on what's going on with the new building, and share some great photos of the school. Enjoy! and happy (almost) Spring!
Brainstorm
Ahh, Middle school... although most people I've met in life do not look back on their time in Jr. High as a high-point to their existence, we at LOGAN Hope try to help these adolescents learn and grow in exciting ways. One thing we do is bring in guest speakers to speak about their careers, and take students on lots of exciting field trips. Students have heard from lawyers, principals, journalists, missionaries, and others in addition to traveling to a variety of high schools and universities to get a vision of life after Jr High. 6th grader, Moronica Teng, says, "It's exciting getting to hear from all those people. We get to learn about what careers are out there for us!" The 8th graders recently toured Eastern University's new charter high school and are anxiously awaiting their high school acceptance letters which should arrive any time now. The whole class is focused on and excited for what's ahead for them post-LOGAN Hope.

Say, "Cheeeeese!"
One of our winter projects has been taking advantage of the large numbers of helpful and available college-student volunteers in the area. This winter we've had college students doing random work projects for us in our new building, working with us to design a new future website, helping us raise some funds, and taking some great photographs for us to use! All the photos in this newsletter, in fact, were taken by college volunteer, Caroline, as she works on a project for her Photo Journalism degree from Drexel. Thanks, Caroline!

Storytime
LOGAN Hope students are hard at work reading lots and lots of books to accumulate hours for the Six Flags reading program "Read to Succeed". Students that do 6 hours of outside reading from November to March all get a free ticket to Six Flags Great Adventure Theme Park!! (which we, as a school, take advantage of at the end of the year) We have great readers here and out of all the kids eligible for the program, only 4 chose not to participate! go readers, go!

Hope to see you soon.
Part of what makes LOGAN Hope so great is the family-like atmosphere. Now that we're inside and beginning to fix up our new building, we're getting more and more excited for our LOGAN Hope family to grow. We're looking towards being able to open an Pre-K program this September and eventually double our whole student capacity. Thanks to some helpful volunteer groups we've done some serious cleaning and have begun to store equipment in this new building. In fact, if you're local and want to get a team together to help us, even just for a few hours on a Saturday, please just hit reply and let me know.
Thanks for reading! We really appreciate our team of suporters. Each e-newsletter goes out to hundreds of people around the world. Thanks for your interest, your love of LOGAN Hope, your prayers, and support. If you are considering volunteering or helping out LOGAN Hope in some way, just hit reply and let me know, we'd love the help. Or just stop by for a tour. Any financial gifts can be mailed to us at: 4934 N 13th St. Philadelphia PA 19141. Thanks again!
