What is LOGAN Hope?Community

Introduction | Statement of Faith | Vision | History | Community | Staff | Board

The Logan community in North Philadelphia is made up of mostly Southeast Asians and African Americans. The Cambodian community and their needs have been the primary focus of LOGAN Hope. The Cambodian community is one of the poorest immigrant groups in the U.S., and in Philadelphia, the Logan Cambodians are the poorest. Many came to this country as refugees, fleeing the genocide of the Killing Fields under the Khmer Rouge in the 1970's.

As a community, the Khmer (pronounced "Kah-mai")--as they refer to themselves --continue to be plagued by the trauma and loss from their past. At the same time, the Khmer are struggling in the present to build a future within the inner-city environment of high drug and crime activity, alcohol abuse, and the general lack of education, health, and social resources for their families.

The deep spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical void caused by such a terrible experience as the Killing Fields has had a profound affect on the Khmer. Yet as they struggle to survive in what is the concrete jungle of America's inner-cities, we are joining them in their plight as we proclaim the healing and transforming power that is in the gospel of Jesus Christ. Through the gospel, we offer nothing less than a Savior who has offered His own life for the healing and salvation of our souls.
